Repurposing common items:Matthew Heckart | backpack strap
Though robotic and myoelectric arms are becoming more widely available, they are not an option for most amputees because of their expense. I experimented with repurposing padded straps and side-release buckles from backpacks into the harness for the body-powered prosthetic arm. I also hypothesized about different ways to configure the existing straps to redistribute pressure across the back. I believe that prosthetists could greatly improve the quality and comfort of the body-powered prosthetic arm by incorporating technology and materials from mass-produced consumer products like backpacks and bras.
