Masters Workshop in Italy / Schedule & Curriculum

Schedule & Curriculum

Each day in Venice and Rome will be divided between classroom and fieldwork.

Day One

  • Research Methods This class will be used to launch students on their quest(s). Where, what, who, and why are just a few of the questions students will be asked by faculty to address how Venice and Rome will be used in relation to their work.
  • Exploration With their goals clearly stated, students will start their exploration in selected archives, collections, museums, libraries, and studios.

Day Two

  • Overview Morning lectures will cover the history of typography from ancient to modern times. These will be illustrated lectures designed to provide a deeper understanding of the design of Italy.
  • Analysis and Discussion After their first day of exploration, students will be asked to share their respective findings—photographic, drawings, etc.—with the group. They will discuss the relative merits of their discoveries from which they will individually, or in small groups, determine the nature of their projects.

Day Three

  • Planning Students will work with faculty to develop a plan of investigation and determine the necessary deliverables and outcomes for their projects.
  • Exploration Field trips to relevant places and institutions will be used to observe and collect data.

Day Four

  • Overview Lectures on typography and design practice will be scheduled in classrooms and field trips.
  • Individual Study Students will have the opportunity to work on their own or collaboratively, in the workshop or outside environments.

Day Five

  • Overview Lectures, discussions, and explorations.
  • Development Students will develop their projects further and make preliminary presentations.

Day Six

  • Adventure Students will develop their own group narrative, including field trips and other relevant activities.
  • Presentation and Critique Final Projects will be presented and critiqued by faculty and invited guests.

The Italy Guidebook Project

Students will research, write, and design unique guidebooks to Venice and Rome that draw upon the various visual stimuli developed during the workshops by using photography, ephemeral, historical and contemporary found objects and personal imagery.

Although the form and content of each guidebook will be unique and conform to each student’s interests, every book will include the following:

  1. Statment of purpose
  2. Map of area or locale under consideration (to be custom designed)
  3. Typographic scheme that conforms to the specific area of interest
  4. Bibliography/References/Resources
  5. Minimum of 16 pages
Guidebooks can be on the following (or other) sample themes:
  • Food
  • Typography
  • Art
  • Literature
  • Theater

Guidebooks should be well designed and as personal as desired.
