A semester-long project in Gail Anderson’s Just Type course, we were asked to create music videos with two restrictions: they had to be black and white and they could made of type and nothing else.
Rather than embrace a karaoke tendency and just spell out all of the lyrics on screen, I decided to tell a story. Every single character is constructed from letters and symbols found in the typefaces Helvetica Rounded, Porky’s, Bauhaus 93, Futura and Engravers Initials.
I am currently at work on the “director’s cut” which will incorporate all the elements I didn’t have time or wasn’t permitted to include (i.e. puppets, video and color).
