Meet The Students: Mitchell R. Johnson

Sep 26 2017

Hello my name is Mitchell R Johnson (far left). I’m an interdisciplinary artist and designer based in Brooklyn, New York by way of Houston Texas.

I moved to the “Big Apple” on August 23, 2016 to teach and design for the socially engaged project with comrades / visual artists Joseph Cuillier and Shani Peters. Our mission was to explore the properties of design and investigate the ability to use art as a vehicle for social change through observation, research, and experimentation. We taught at several institutions such as Boys and Girls High School and Harlem Village Academy. We received feedback from the students as well as an analysis of the projects that were produced. In the process, we introduced the idea through Alternative Art School Fairs and our own festival “The Black Love Festival” inclusive to like minded individual of all backgrounds, nationalities, and artistic preferences.

This is a brief overview of my involvement with an education initiative I taught and designed for entitled “The Black School”. The experience was fulfilling due the fact that the students projects shed light on their critical thinking skills and involvement with their communities.
