Tibor Kalman was a renowned graphic designer and editor known for his pioneering work in graphic design and his role as the founding editor of the multicultural magazine. He taught at the MFA Design program from 1998-1999.

Education

Kalman briefly attended New York University, where he studied journalism before dropping out to pursue a distinguished career in various design fields. Kalman taught himself to design advertisements, store signs, shopping bags, and the original B&N bookplate trademark. For the next eight years he directed the advertising and display of what had grown from one to fifty-five outlets. In 1979 Kalman accepted a high-paying offer to design signs for a discount department store chain, and soon after left to open his own graphic design studio.

professional experience

Kalman founded the influential New York design firm M&Co in 1979. He also served as the editor-in-chief of "Colors" magazine from 1991 to 1995, which focused on global and multicultural issues. Fusing modernist social responsibility and post-modernist introspection, M&Co developed not only a style but also an ethic that raised the bar of graphic design thinking and practice.Additionally, he worked at Barnes & Noble, where he helped transform the company’s visual identity.
