Epigraphy & Calligraphy by Raviance Robinson
by Raviance Robinson
Today was an exciting day as we were given the opportunity to focus on lettering styles. James Clough, typographer, designer and calligrapher began the morning reviewing the study of inscriptions as writing (epigraphy), and its influence on lettering and type thereafter. He then dove into calligraphy – showing how a carving can develop over time to become a script or italic; and the practical and artistic road traveled to get there. This was further shown during his calligraphy drawings, when he shared the details within the beauty and precise nature of this art. During this exercise, he demonstrated the differences and effects of writing utensils, serif vs sans serif, loops, kerning and pen pressure to paper…to name a few.
