*Collecting as Instinct*, an exhibition by the MFA Design class of 2004, explores the most primal behavior — acquisition. The human urge to hunt and gather lies within all of us. Call it collecting, foraging, assembling, or shopping, through this exhibition of common place objects we discover unique forms of sustenance and appreciate the matter of everyday life.

This culling of the humble items herein, some with little or no intrinsic value, document how each of us has discovered that, in one way or another, we rely on certain artifacts to underscore life’s meaning. In this way, we are all collectors.

The memories and associations evoked by these items are both specific and universal. Collecting is a survival instinct and these artifacts illustrate the hunter/gatherer in all of us. We use the context of a museum exhibition to tell our individual and collective stories. What each of us chooses to preserve of our material culture reaveals not only our unique personalities but also the
essence of the society that informs us.
