Alumni Spotlight: Emily Roemer

Where and what are you working on right now?

I am currently working at The New Yorker as their Senior Designer. I absolutely love working here because of the diversity of projects I work on, the people I work with, and seeing our work in print every week. I do not think seeing the print edition on a newsstand or seeing someone reading it on the subway will ever get dull. I love typography and focus a lot on type treatments in the magazine, specifically on the Fiction stories each week. I also art direct illustrations for the weekly magazine, which has been a really exciting thing to learn how to do. I never did much art directing before this job and am really grateful to be able to work with talented illustrators from all over the world. I also have a hand in designing some of our merchandise, and my typographic tote bag just launched last month
— which I am so excited about.

I also continue to run my freelance design business on the side, and have been working on some exciting branding and design projects this year as well as painting a wall mural at a children’s hospital.

What impact has SVA MFA Design had on your career?

SVA MFA Design had the biggest impact on my life and my career. I am so grateful for my experience. I am always joking with Steve that I want to come back and do MFA Round Two, I’d love a couple more years at the studio with my classmates and professors. Without this program I would definitely not be where I am today. It also gave me the confidence to voice my opinions and ideas about design without second guessing myself or feeling under qualified. The structure of the program gives you so many tools beyond design and I think that is something that is really special about this program and community. I am happy to be a lifelong member.

If you could choose a thesis topic today, what would you pick?

Since I just graduated last year, I still really love my thesis topic and the work and research I put into it, but having a chance to get some space from it, I already have several things I wish I could tweak and add to the project. Projects never truly end, do they?
