Class 2020: Meet Katherine Killeffer

My name is Katherine, and I’m a creative director and designer with a strong interest in the power of design to help move the needle on consumer behavior when it comes to waste and environmental sustainability. One of my favorite works from first year was a small project for Steven Heller’s propaganda class – the assignment was to create a campaign to influence people to act in a specific way. I created an OOH plastic waste PSA campaign, which hinged on the idea that while most people, particularly in a highly educated city like New York, are aware of the dangers and effects of plastic waste, our many, many street trash cans (an estimated 23,000 in NYC) are constantly overflowing with recyclable plastic. I believe that by bringing the many powerful statistics and imagery around plastic we all know at the macro level to the point of decision making in your day to day life, New Yorkers might be inspired to hold onto their plastic and recyclable trash a moment longer for recycling, or reduce their plastic footprint altogether.
