Class 2021: Meet Bill Chien
Home: Hainan, China / Web: billchien.net
My name is Bill Chien (“Zheng Jian” is my legal name). I was born
and raised in Hainan, China, a tropical tourist destination. I received my
BFA Graphic Design at California College of the Arts. During my years in
San Francisco, I interned at SYPartners, volunteered at
TEDxSanFrancisco, and contracted at frog design for half a year.
My favorite project is called If BART Can Speak. I was fortunate to
be in the inaugural group of a student-lead design studio TBD*, where we
design for Bay Area nonprofits. During that semester, Bay Area Rapid
Transit (BART) came to us with a list of customers complaints, asking us to
create buzz-creating campaigns of passenger etiquette. By infusing
personalities into everyday objects and fixtures in cars and stations, I
created a poster series that encourages passengers to take care of BART as
well as care for each other. Because of that campaign, I got interviewed by
a local News channel, for the first time!
