Meet the Class of 2010

Dec 04 2009

What are the class of 2010’s best works?

Student: Mariana Uchoa
Project: Stepping on Shapes: Portuguese Stone Patterns

This project for Howard Reeves’ Book Merchandizing class was about the patterns on sidewalks from Portuguese colonized countries, including Brazil.

Portuguese pavement (calçada portuguesa) is the traditional paving used in most pedestrian areas in Portugal and old Portuguese colonies. Growing up in Rio de Janeiro I was fascinated with those patterns. The book shows the calçadas as a form of art, and provides vectorized material to transcript these rich graphics to different canvas. This was a very personal project for me, it was great to research sidewalks and draw patterns.
