Student Spotlight: Chudi Zhang
Hi!! My name is Chudi Zhang. I’m from China. After four years in the SVA BFA Design program, I came to the MFA program to view this field in a completely new point of view. One work I’m proud of would be “Personal Daily”, in which I visualized the “Big Data” phenomenon and made it a customizable newspaper.
Details about the project “Personal Daily”
Nowadays, people are used to getting information from the internet or smartphone apps. With the development of technology, people’s interest is easily analyzed by the calculations of artificial intelligence so that more and more information under similar categories is offered to the user. A unique “daily” paper is ready for a certain user to view, which is often called an “information cocoon”. The theory is credited to the MIT Media Lab founder, Nicholas Negroponte. This project is a visualization of this “personal daily” phenomenon. I collected different people’s viewing contents within the same app and created a series of physical newspapers based on them. I asked people to take screenshots of forty contents the app offers them based on big data, and then classified them into forty categories. After that, I created icons for each category, and used computing to randomly create images showing their interests to maintain the feature of big data.
