MFAD Students visited the magical apartment of Dorothy Globus. Dorothy has worked as a curator at many New York institutions like: the Cooper Hewitt, Museum of Art and Design (MAD) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
When walking into her apartment, students were immediately struck by the sheer volume of things in her collection. China plates, pencils from the early 20th century and NY restaurant matchboxes are amongst the multitude of things she collects. Students ooh’d and aah’d when Dorothy highlighted individual pieces like her stunning 20th century retractable traveling hangers.
Each student was asked to bring a small object that was meaningful to them. Dorothy used this exercise as a way of emphasizing the different values that objects are given. Students left her apartment with a new found appreciation for everyday objects.
