Steve Heller calls himself a collaborator. Given his interest in the holocaust and Nazi propaganda and iconography this is an unusual self-description to say the least. In the world of holocaust scholarship by-stander, collaborator and enabler are not merely descriptive terms, they are denunciations which at best convey lack of courage. But, Steve is anything, but uncourageous as he examines people and topics within his profession with candor sufficient to make others uneasy. His recent book on the Swastika and his soon to be published book on Totalitarian Propaganda are further evidence of his willingness to engage difficult subjects which returns us to the word collaboration. It seems clear that Steve is trying to resurrect a word whose recent connections have made an otherwise serviceable word suspect. Although he believed that the Swastika is irredeemable, he has clearly reclaimed collaboration and to great purpose as can been seen in this digital representation of his recent Master Exhibition.
