Out of Hand is about knitting. It’s a meditation tool for people who can’t meditate. It’s a resource for learning how to build stuff from nothing. It’s a project by Michael Stone.
How can design improve difficult life transitions? How can it provide release for the raw emotions and inspire new personal growth? What began as a box to scream into and phased through scribble blocks, interactive books, and modifiable furniture, ultimately led to knitting. Knitting carries certain cultural preconceptions despite its wellness benefits, which allowed me to address it like never before. I’ve rethought the modern knitting video, productized this experience into kits, and found community in teaching workshops at the VA. Please check out my videos, pick up some needles, and join with me and knit.
